Bulletin BoardIn the month of May we have been featuring WINNERS!  Caldecott Medal winners are for outstanding illustrations.  Newbery Medal winners are for excellent literature.  These medals are the most prestigious awards in the United States.  The American Library Association gives these awards.

The Newbery Awards were first given in 1922.  MEI elementary has thirty eight winners in its collection.  The oldest book is called The Cat Who Went to Heaven by Elizabeth Coatsworth from 1931.  Our most recent winner from 2013 is The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.  Miss Bohr is currently reading this story of a guerilla who lives in a mall zoo, to her class.

Some interesting trivia about the Newbery Awards:

A fatIMAG3838her and son both won awards for their books.  Sid Fleishman for The Whipping Boy and his son Paul Fleishman for Joyful Noise.

Newbery Winners include books of poetry, non-fiction and some have been made into movies.  Sarah Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan starred Glen Close and Christopher Walken.
